The first prerequisite to use of PageMate
software is that you must have a software license registered on
your PageMate Server system. If you have not received a software
license key, you should contact Systemetrics via telephone (1-617-868-8308)
or e-mail (support@system.com) to get one. Temporary license keys
are available for 30-day software evaluation. Permanent license
keys are provided to users that have purchased a PageMate software
license. For additional information about obtaining and registering
your PageMate software license, see PageMate
Software License.
When PageMate is used to send messages
via dial-up (switched telephone network) connection to paging service
providers, modem setup and operation can be a source of concern...
and sometimes frustration. Modems are an essential element in providing
data communications over the switched telephone network, however,
so we have assembled a variety of resources to help relieve the
pain and frustration that can be associated with modem setup and
operation.
The first resource that we can provide
is modems pre-configured and tested to work with PageMate. For additional
information, see PageMate Modems.
The challenge in setting up modems for use with paging is to make
your modem emulate a TeleType (brand) teleprinter. For more information
about setting up modems for use with PageMate, see PageMate Modem Setup. Finally, if
you have a modem setup that has been working for some time and has
suddenly become problematic, PageMate log files can be the key to
discovering the truth about what's going on in data communications
with your paging service provider.
During normal operation, PageMate will
make note of any errors or exception conditions that occur by writing
a message to a log file. If an error or exception occurs in the
context of an interactive user interface, a brief message describing
the problem or event will usually also be displayed. PageMate log
files can be found in the logs subdirectory (under the PageMate
root directory on a PageMate Server or Client system) and in user
home directories (on a PageMate Client system).
For purposes of debugging and problem
resolution, log files can also be used to obtain a detailed report
of everything the software does and every message it sends to or
receives from a paging network or service. A special debug logging
facility in the software provides this capability. For additional
information, see PageMate Debug
Logging.
